As I reviewed the content, the characters, the interests, and valid concerns/fears from last Thursday's team meeting, I could help but to think about what our mash up will sound like. The resident attached attending team has the melody of patient care, the harmony of inspiring and teaching residents, the treble clef of professional aspirations, and the bass of personal life. The DHS team has the melody of patient care, the harmony of patient focused experience, the treble clef of professional aspirations, and the bass of our personal lives.
The music we make in our professional work at LLUMC is different, but not all that different. We all want our patient care pass the "Grandma Test". We all want residents to learn and hopefully enjoy their experience here. We all want to be fulfilled in our professional pursuits and still have the time to connect with our loved ones. Blending the harmonies and melodies won't be easy - it will take thought, debate, and even frustration. So looking at all our options for the betterment of hospital medicine here at LLUMC, also means we have to look at the changes we've got to make. We have distinguish between perceived and true value of our work. We may have to up our skills and knowledge clinically, and be willing assume the learner role even as we serve as attendings.
Staying on task will be key to how we get from good to great. Good ideas are important seedlings for improving our professional lives, and cultivation will take commitment. Not just the nodding of heads in the meeting, but a true realignment of wanting to be great.
I expect our mash will be a top 40 hit! We will play it in at the bedside of the patient, in a duet with our nurses, and in the meeting room of our idea generating, forward thinking, yes empowering group.
